The key ingredients you need to find a new job
… 40% off life coaching packages this autumn
When we lose confidence, it becomes very difficult to keep perspective on things, to see possibilities and our world becomes very narrow. Yet, there are always possibilities. There are always choices. Even when we think there aren’t, there are.
In the current climate of Covid-19 many of us have experienced loss and have had to embrace radical change (Change, we want it, yet resist it). The loss of a loved one, the loss of business, the loss of a job.
Losing one’s job is a major life change. It’s like having the rug pulled from under your feet.
That’s how it felt to me six years ago when I lost my part time job at Friends of the Earth due to a restructure. I took it very personally. I felt worthless, literally redundant, like a no-one. For three weeks I was in a black hole. I felt it was unfair, I felt ashamed, I felt judged. I felt out of control, the victim of life’s happenings.
Then, when it sank in that I had lost my job, something began to change. My perspective started to broaden and I could see the loss as an opportunity to take my coaching and mindfulness work full time.
However, my companions, anxiety and fear, didn’t make it easy for me. Rumination and catastrophising were tormenting me. Thoughts such as: “What if I can’t cope”, “What if I can’t make a living”, “What if I lose everything and never find a job again?”, “What if I become homeless?” I literally was imagining myself on the streets. It was intense. It was painful. But most of all, it was disempowering. The thoughts were chipping away at my confidence, undermining me. I was losing sight of any possibilities. It was hard to hold onto any perspective at all.
Loss, something ending, always also holds a new beginning. It’s intrinsic to all life.
By learning to acknowledge the loss, by turning towards it and feeling the pain, we can step out of victim mode, we can take back our life and look forward.
If you have lost your job during the pandemic, you are not alone.
I have created a FREE RESOURCE with questions to help you reflect on your situation and practical tools to help you to take positive steps towards finding a new job.
1. What are your priorities?
2. Review your life purpose
3. What are your skills, expertise, talents/passions?
4. Transferrable skills and training needs
5. Clarity about hours, location, salary
6. ‘Must haves’ and ‘nice to haves’ in a job
More guidance on each of these questions and tools can be found in my free resource.
