How to be more present in your day to day

Posted by Karen in Life Coaching tips

How easy do you find it to be in the moment?

Many of us spend much of our time focused either on the past or on the future, paying very little attention to what is happening in the present, this means that for much of the time we may be unaware of much of our experience.

Here’s a digest of the tips for being present I’ve been sharing on Facebook and Twitter. It would be great to hear from you on how useful you’ve found the tips. Drop me an email or leave your comments below…..

Tip 1: Feel the soles of your feet on the ground when walking. Stay focussed on the pysical sensations of the movement.

Tip 2: Introduce 3-mins breathing spaces into your day, close your eyes, follow your breath. This technique is wonderful to center yourself.

Tip 3: Feeling stressed? Look back on your personal experience for something postive, enjoyable, beautiful.

Tip 4: Find ways of being kind and gentle with yourself. Bring awareness into your self-care and self- nurturing.

Tip 5: Notice what kind of things your mind is engaged in. Being more aware helps us step back and be more present.

Tip 6: Changing our relationship to what we find difficult lies at the heart of mindfulness. Our default mode often is to resist anything we find painful, physically or emotionally. We want it to go away. If we can gently turn towards it, saying ‘hello’ to what we don’t like rather than pushing it away can make life easier and help overcome resistance.

Tip 7: Choose one meal a day that you are going to eat mindfully. That’s when you simply eat – no talking, no reading…

Tip 8: Integrate daily exercise into your life: yoga, swimming, cycling… this will help you become more present through your body.

Tip 9: Think about taking up a mindfulness course. What you will learn is invaluable for your personal growth and happiness.

Tip 10: Choose one routine activity every day e.g. cleaning your teeth, having a shower. Focus on the physical sensations.
